FAQs

Below, you'll find answers to some of the most common questions couples have about my services. If you have a question that isn't addressed here, don't hesitate to get in touch.

A wedding commissioner is an appointed position in the state of Virginia. Individuals are appointed by their local courts and are legal to perform weddings throughout the state. Virginia does not have “Justice of the peace” and does not recognize online ordination, instead, individuals are commissioned to serve the community in this way, are sworn in, and carry bonding.

Your ceremony can be anything you want it to be. Many couples want to incorporate their spiritual and cultural traditions into the ceremony, with elements such as communion, special readings, and handfastings. I love to learn about your culture and traditions and work with you to find the best way to honor these.

Other popular options are family blending ceremonies, blessings, and wine mingling. There really are too many to list.

The state actually sets the price for the services of the commissioner. This fee is currently $75 but is subject to change.

Travel fees are assessed at .67 cents/mile, and I do the first 15 miles complimentary.

Fees for additional writing and research services are $35/hour (custom writing, additional consultation beyond the first interview). These will never be a surprise. If you are interested in additional services, we’ll discuss prices immediately.

Rehearsal fees- I am not a wedding planner/coordinator but I have seen many weddings and have plenty of ideas for you. I supply an outline that is sufficient for most couples. If you would like me to attend a rehearsal that is being coordinated by a professional planner, my fee is $45 to cover my time. If I am attending the rehearsal to give direction to the party, creating a detailed timeline, and coordinating with the other vendors the fee is $75. Travel fees do apply.

Holidays/Off hours- Please add $25 to your ceremony fee for holidays and early or late ceremonies.  These times are available on a limited basis.

Weekdays and weekends are all “normal” for weddings.

Times before 10 am, after 7 pm, or ceremonies on holidays will incur a small upcharge.

As a state marriage commissioner, I’m sworn to marry anyone legally allowed to in the state of Virginia.  I feel strongly that your officiant is more than just the legal signature on your license. I work closely with you to make your ceremony and your vows truly reflect who you are. It is vital that we are a good match. You deserve someone who is excited to work on your wedding.  That being said, I may not be the best fit for you- contact me for  a free consultation so you can make this decision.

Please get in touch so we can discuss your wishes.
